 Who We Are We are a master graduated couple from University of London who have been fascinated by the richness and uniqueness of ethnic folk art & craft. One of us comes from the Southwest China while the other has been living in Europe, North America, Hong Kong and China. What We Want To Achieve We are proud of and believe it is meaningful to help Ethnic Minorities to preserve and promote their culture. These people are friendly, have passion for life and are very talented - as reflected from these beautiful art works! We wish people of all background from around the world, in addition to guru in arts and crafts, could have a chance to appreciate their talents. How To Achieve We find these beautiful handicrafts being sold exclusively in fancy shops in London, New York, Toronto and Tokyo at an expensive price. By having us to travel around ethnic villages in collecting these valuable artworks and sell them directly to you at a reasonable price, apart from earning some income for us, we trust this direct approach is more cost effective in promoting them to you all. We hope this would create a win-win-win for you, us and ethnic minority groups who living in remote villages and mountainous areas. Hope We Can Contribute These artworks contain high artistic value and are real treasures - nice pattern design, rich folk colour, inherited technique and excellent craftsmanship. These works, embedded with deep ethnic minorities’ historical and cultural contents, are the heritage of mankind. They are in need to preserve and to promote as some of them are dispersing due to the impact of other dominant cultures. We also believe, to make this world a better place, it is worthwhile for people of different cultures to learn from each other, and that people would understand and appreciate others that are of different backgrounds. It is also important to shorten the economical gap between the ethnic minorities & the majority, and to improve the communication and the exchange of thoughts and ideas between the East and the West. Before we committed to this venture, Norman was in business consulting while Aileen was in business conferencing. We got our MBA in University of London and stationed in Shanghai to further our career. As we have family members in Southwest China, we made frequent visits to that area. Southwest China has approx. 50 ethnic groups. These people are friendly, warm hearted, honest and hard working. Due to the lack of business skills, technology and funding, many of their home based businesses are not competitive, putting themselves into difficult financial situation. Our jobs at that time were to help company to growth, we then naturally had this question in mind: established companies vs. ethnic home based businesses, which is in need of help the most?
We all know ethnic people, or marginalized producers, require more resource and help, but paradoxically, skills, knowledge and technology always go to places where good profit be generated, i.e. established companies. Ethnic people are, therefore, inevitably, always in the underdog position.
Non-profit organizations around the world are putting effort to subsidize these people. We want to be part of the force, but in a slightly different angle and approach. We believe to coach them to become a successful business leaders by running a business together with them, could be an effective and sustainable solution. Through coaching and partnership, good business skill, mindset and knowledge can be propagated, and hopefully could improve their chance of success in running a profitable business. Profit is a fuel to acquire skills, knowledge and technology, and is crucial for healthy and sustainable growth.
We are a very small team right now but dare to make a big dream of seeing a world to become a fairer and better place. We are prepared to keep the idea of helping the marginalized producers alive, and are willing to commit ourselves to accomplish it, though it will be tough and taking long time. We are idealistic about the fact that 'profit making' and 'helping the poor' are not mutually exclusive. Instead, we believe it is what the 21 century company should do!|
The Pursuit of Aesthetic
 How Interact China Began Norman & Aileen, co-founded Interact China in 2004, are MBA graduates from the University of London, who have been fascinated by the richness and uniqueness of Oriental ethnic arts & crafts. These artworks, containing high artistic value and deep cultural heritage, are mainly handmade by ethnic people living in the mountainous Southwest China. As one of us come from that region, we have an edge to understand their culture, and can communicate well with them to exploit their talents. As we growth, we reached different groups in various provinces including Guizhou, Yunnan, Sichuan, Hunan, Xinjiang and Tibet, covering most major ethnic products in China that worth appreciating and promoting. Joyful and Meaningful Business We believe in e-commerce for its ability to reach people worldwide, and built our business via internet since day one. We believe in partnership, and enjoy partnering with ethnic artisans of all sort to minimize transaction cost and maximize their returns. We also enjoy to grow with the community, and offer ethnic people as well as young educated graduates to join our team. We hope we can contribute the community in some way, and make this business joyful and meaningful! The Pursuit of Aesthetic By the time most major ethnic goods are being covered, we evolved to include Han Chinese. Although its form of expression and its technique are not the exact same, they both, through their sophisticated hand crafting works, are having the same pursue - Aesthetic (美), and in particular an "Oriental Aesthetic". This aesthetic, in our opinion, can bring joy, excitement and quality living to people's lives, regardless which part of the globe he or she lives. We are enthusiastic about the promotion of it, and are confident that with our years of experience and expertise in both Oriental Aesthetic and E-commerce, we can bridge well the Oriental Aesthetic with the rest of the world.
