Su Embroidery Cashmere Scarf

Who says all-natural products can’t feel luxurious? Not us! Deftly woven using top-quality cashmere wool, this beautiful accessory is light and breathable, made from the softest material that will not irritate the skin. The simple design is crafted flawlessly, creating an aesthetic of understated elegance, perfect for a nature lover with a soft spot for luxury! Thanks to the masterful Su double-sided embroidery, the scarf is accented on both sides with delicately embroidered floral patterns in pastel shades. Never again will you have to worry about which way to wrap it to show off the patterns, both ways work! We recommend these scarves as the perfect way to stay stylish while keeping warm; pair with a trench coat and matching gloves for a cozy look on a chilly autumn night, or draped around the shoulders over a cream jumper to keep the draft out! Colors include: grey, pink, light blue, champion, beige and purple.

Su Embroidery: An Intangible Cultural Heritage

Su embroidery or su xiu 苏绣 originates in the city of Suzhou in Jiangsu province, the centre of Chinese embroidery since the Spring and Autumn period (770-476 BC), some 2,500 years ago. This style is so iconic in part thanks to its unique ability to create identical designs on both sides of the fabric. Known as shuāng miàn xiù 双面ç»? no other style can mimic this double-sided embroidery. Su embroidery is a broad and complex style of embroidery, but can be roughly divided into two groups: ‘even embroidery’ ping xiu 平绣, which stresses uniformity by avoiding crossing thread, and ‘random embroidery’ luan zhen xiu 乱针ç»? which involves layering and crossing threads of different colors and thicknesses. Both techniques are known for balanced compositions and dense stitching with both thick and thin threads. These techniques require generations to master and the skills are passed from mother to daughter. In 2006 Su embroidery was designated as an intangible cultural heritage of China, and in 2018 the technique was selected as one of the first of China’s national traditional craft revitalization and protection objects.

Cashmere wool weaving: an ancient tradition

Cashmere is made from the wool of Cashmere goats and first began in Mongolia and other parts of Central Asia, more than 2,000 years ago. While it is not as insulating as other types of wool, cashmere wool is highly prized for its soft and fine texture, which can be woven into thin, dense fabrics that are gentle on the skin. Many nomadic, herding groups have made cashmere in traditional ways for millennia. The industrialized process is very similar, though on a much larger scale; it is a complex multi-step process. First the goats’ coats are sheared and then this wool is cleaned to remove dirt and other impurities. It is then straightened and spun on a spinning machine, which twists the wool fibers together to form yarn. This yarn is next dyed to create the desired color and then woven to form the fabric! China is currently the biggest exporter of cashmere in the world, and here at Interact China, we ensure that all our cashmere is ethically sourced.
