Fortress Ground Opera
Tibetan Thangka

Tibetan Thangka Where does it come from? Why called "Ground" Opera? Who perform them?
It is said that the opera originates from sometime between 1368 and 1398 during the reign of Ming-Dynasty. When Ming Dynasty expanded its territories, its armed forces relocated from the central China to the Southwest China. They stationed in the remote mountainous "Tun Pu" (Tun Po means fortress) and have brought along the Ground Opera with them. This performing art had since then been preserved and passed along by Tun Po villagers. The Ground Opera got its name for the fact that it can be performed on any open ground and do not need any performing stage. The performing groups are composed of farmers who usually belong to the same village. Ground Opera is usually performed during the harvest season and the Chinese New Year, and is a sign of rich and prosperous life.

Tibetan Thangka Theatrical Costume, Vivid Masks, Orchestral Music, Historical Fictions
During the performance, actors are dressed up in theatrical costumes and wear masks on the forehead that have a piece of black gauze to cover the face. The warriors will wear chicken feather on the head and small flags on the back. These masks are hand carved from the wood of aspen followed by color painting. Different roles will have different facial expressions, which are extremely vivid. The performance is accompanied by orchestral music and percussions, and its storyline is mostly related to historical fictions, such as "the Romance of Three Kingdom", "Talking about Tang Dynasty", "Warriors in Yang Family" and "The Legend of Yue Fei".

Tibetan Thangka The "Living Fossil" of Opera Art
The Ground Opera is sung in the local Buyi language. Some experts believe that Ground Opera was originated from "Nuo Dance", an ancient tribal ritual dance dated back to Eastern Zhou Dynasty (770 - 256 B.C.), and hence called it the "living fossil" of an opera art. In recent years, items and research related to Ground Opera have been collected and conducted by art research institutes and museums in different countries, including Britain, the United States, France, Germany and Japan.
