Traditional Festive Mask - an Artistic Glamour of Northwest China
This traditional hand painted wooden mask is called "Mashao" originated from the Shanxi Province of Northwestern Chin. It can be traced back some 1500 years ago, which was used to celebrate the "Shehuo" Festival – a festive occasion for songs and dances to ward off the evil spirit. People at that time believed it was endowed with magic power to communicate with God and be able to protect their family. Today it is a charming art form demonstrating the unique artistic glamour of Northwest China. Roles painted are legendary figures in folk tales, with emphasis on eyebrows, eyes and month to characterize the nature of the role. The colors used have its meaning too, such as red meaning integrity and black meaning brave.
