Aboriginal Beauty – Ethnic Miao Handmade Batik Art This very bright and striking wax batik artwork is handmade by an ethnic Miao (or Hmong, same rooted) living in the remote mountainous Southwest China.
Batik in China can be dated back to Han Dynasty (220 AD). It was a profession for aristocratic ladies whose delicately painted designs, and were a sign of cultivation and refinement. The process is all manual and is rather tedious, which involves drawing, waxing (with special wax knife using beeswax), dyeing and wax melting. This technique had been lost among Han Chinese but being kept very well by ethnic Miao. In fact, the United Nation (UN) reported that Miao costume is one of the world cultural relics, where Miao Batik plays a major role.
Ethnic Miao Motifs - Plain, Naive, Rough, Powerful Miao motifs are plain, naive, rough and powerful. Its shapes, not confining to exact details of natural images, are boldly diversified and exaggeratedly drawn. As they do not have wording system, abstract symbols or totems are also commonly found. Miao is closely knitted with the natural world. They enjoy expressing their joy and aesthetic feelings with the nature in the form of batik art, making this artwork truly passionate and true to heart!
